Proud to be Iban

Let me be absolutely honest here, what this kid said regarding Iban people is insulting. He's insulting the intelligence and capability of us Ibans. What he assumes is:
Rural Sarawakian = Iban = duduk dlm hutan = ulu-ulu = buta IT.

* BTW, he's from Miri and he's involved with Red Crescent Miri Chapter... Hmm... Tak layak sungguh jadi Belia Red Crescent.

What he wrote:
After reading the Borneo Post, only the front page, I found out an interesting topic to deliberate. Its not supposed to be funny, and I hope you won't read it. I'm not being a racist towards the rural people, I am telling the true facts of everything regarding this post, which is, SARAWAK RURAL STUDENTS TO SURF INTERNET WITHIN NEXT TWO YEARS. And the mission starts next week, RM 2 billion sponsored by the Ministry of Communication.

Wow! Everything gonna change. Mark my words. Try you imagine. If the org2 Iban have Streamyx in their rural areas, and wireless LAN gaming in the rumah panjang, so, its like one whole Gunz clan room consists of 500 players. Walao.

Then, they will ofcourse sign up for a Friendster account, since that is the only website they know. Or maybe Facebook. Mati lo. Those websites will be crowded again. Thirdly, Youtube. I refer them as Kampung ucak. They surely use the opportunity to learn shuffle, cause this is what they call as cool. And you can see them doing running man in the middle of the jungle. Futuristic.

Lastly, they start blogging. Apparently, you know I'll die in blogging, even you can see it now. So, don't be surprised if they defeat me in blogging one day later.

Aduh, ada juga warganegara Malaysia yang berfikiran (ada berfikir ke?) sempit sebegini. Salah siapa? Ibu bapa, masyarakat setempat, atau sistem pendidikan? Of course a lot of people will point their fingers, toes, whateveritmaybe at the education system. How about the parents or even the type of society one lives in? Surely that counts as one of the major influence. If the parents practise respect and did not discriminate or exhibit racist behaviour, for sure the kids will grow up to be 'colour-blind' (non-racist). Otherwise, it will just result in (yet) another narrow-minded spoilt brat who thinks that everyone else must worship the ground he steps upon. Just maybe this kid will grow up to be a protege of namewee???

Talking about discrimination, sometimes, what is interesting is that, orang Sarawak tahu dan peka mengenai our Malaysian counterparts (negeri-negeri lain) but they know next-to-nothing about East Malaysia (I'm referring to Sarawak and Sabah here).
Antaranya;

a) 1997
A lady asked my Dad when we visited my relatives in KL:
Makcik:
"Where are you from?"
Dad:
"Sarawak"
Makcik:
"Is this your first time coming to Malaysia?"
~ Adui la makcik bangang, sah-sah makcik ni suka ponteng kelas Geografi dia dulu. Tak pun sijil MCE dia fail.

b) 1997 (yup, met a lot of this species during this year)
Bright girl:
"Eh, ko duduk Sarawak kan? Org Sarawak duduk kat pokok eh? Korang potong-potong kepala kan?"
Me (with a straight face):
"Eh, tak de lah potong kepala. Mana boleh suka hati ja potong kepala. Orang kurang ajar je sah-sah kena potong kepala. Macam kau ni la. Gerenti jadi hiasan dinding."
(Dalam hati: F$^$$T&KKK!!! you Idiot!)
Bright girl:
o.O' (sweating)

c) One thing that I can't forget was when a 'friend' asked me,
"Macam mana lu boleh dapat A?!"
when he found out that I scored an A for our ICT subject (he was a Science Com graduate).
Eh brother, is it so weird that I managed to beat you? I am competitive. Never underestimate me.

d) My coursemates' reaction when they found out that I got the top result (CGPA : 3.85) among all the Dip.Ed students.
They:
"Wa, dahsyat nya result ko? Apa rahsia ko ek?"
(padahal dalam hati dah buat plan mau buruk/sabotaj aku. Ada aku kisah?)
Me (straight but smug face):
"Ala, senang je. Kitaorg kan duduk atas pokok. So banyak udara segar I guess."
Again. I am competitive. Don't mess with me. I may look harmless but I'll whack you 'pera-pera' bontot...Hahaha *evil*

Muahahahaha...
I sometimes hate them for their ignorance but there's no denying that their stupidity makes great conversation material. Haha... Also can't help but to pity them for their ignorance/stupidity. Kalau di dunia utopia/ideal, spesis ni lama dah kena 'terminate'..

Which is why I told my students to do their absolute best and open the eyes of those ignoramus. Biar mereka buka mata seluas-luasnya dan mengetahui, sesungguhnya, WE ARE THE BEST!

Anang ka alah gasak ke orang wai. Pajak ke diak. Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban!

p/s: He apologized and he removed his post. Sorry kiddo, the damage is done. Let this be a reminder for you to think before you open that 'sial' mouth of yours. Never mess around and discriminate others. Are you REALLY that good?
(Telih sunat bedau gerai ngenemu ka diri ~ nya pen sema nti ia besunat. Kada enda agi kulup)

Very sad! Really tragic. So many people with pea-sized brains! And very often, it was the parents who poisoned them with all the prejudices!!!...And some West Malaysians thought I was West Malaysian and working in Sarawak! They always have the sick idea that people from this side...so ulu!

Yes, he has apologised...and I'm sure that has taught him a good lesson. He's just a kid, anyway...which makes him way better than that grownup adult who refused to apologise after saying the Chinese Malaysians are immigrants.

I think it will be a long long time before we can be like Singapore. They will just tell you they're Singaporeans - not Chinese, Malay, Indian or whatever.

STP:
Yeah, lots of the WM i met while studying thought I'm a WM as well... Thought I am a Chindian from KL. So surprised when I told them that I'm a Sarawakian and an Iban.
"But your English is so good!"
WahLau, make me want to slap them silly eh..
I told them, "even my grandpas in the longhouse can speak better english than u"...LOL!

Dear Anonymous:
The kid has apologized and I believe that everyone has (successfully) managed to traumatize him over this incident.
So let's let this kid off the hook (albeit for now), unless he repeat the same mistakes.

Dear wilson:
A lot of people are monitoring your blog now. Remember kiddo, it ain't smart to post things that are racist/prejudice against any group. Doing that will make u no different than those "apartheids"... Everyone regardless of their colour or creed are built from the same basic DNA matter. There's no difference at all. What maketh a man is not his colour or creed, but the goodness of his character.

then i'll mark him - not just his word that the ibans are going to be better than him. wait a minute? im an iban, and i'm way better than him!

ooops!

well, kid. It's not too late that you learnt your lesson now. let's just forgive and forget

Cibol:
yeah, LOL.
Just hope this'll be one lesson he'll not likely forget.

Well..apa buleh buat? We always have kettles around who call pots black a k a 'Hyppies'. So, perhaps we have to educate the ignorant WMs (not all) or any ignorant bunch of young Sarawakians that, they shouldn't simply underestimate those people who travel down the rivers on their Ikan Empurau boats..please, stop being judgmental towards the 'jungle-ish' people..and stop being pushy as if we are so dumb beyond salvation and don't know any freakin' thing about the outside, modern yet complicated world. Many people like to call us lazy, despite the long hours of non-stop working we go through and low pay, but at least we are more hardworking than those who always want to be the master and 'goyang kaki' only. So, please..at least appreciate us, by not throwing some sort of insults towards us..after all, we don't mind living harmoniously and openly with other people..and this sort of insult is just so unbecoming of a person who himself will and can get hurt easily by the term 'immigrant' thrown by racist bigots who think they are superior than the others. So, just repent and learn how it feels like when you're being degraded verbally or by that judgmental glance people throw at you when you seem not fit in their class or company. Well, I've learned a lot, as I've stayed over here in Peninsular M'sia for quite a considerably long time and this case of Wilson is not a new one. I once got held by a church warden after receiving the Holy Communion in a church after a lady who might get confused of my Malay-like appearance told him to chase after me. Well, I got embarrassed and indirectly insulted by such thing, moreover it happened in a church where there is supposed to be no racism. I gently told the warden that I'm a Sarawakian and born-Catholic and he apologized, but not the lady, which I don't want to mention here of what race she is. After all, what's the big deal for the Christians of Malays becoming a Christian? Aren't you supposed to be glad? Weren't the Christians who mourned, shouted and backed Lina Joy during her trial? Gosh, what I saw in my case was a total contradiction, a double-standard and plain hypocrisies. So, stop talking about turning this world into a Utopia if we ourselves aren't ready for it, otherwise we'll turn this whole world into a 'Hyppies' world. So, Dayaks are not being open minded and not open in embracing new
possibilities? Yeah, I do admit that the majority of them are poor and I believe that is because we still have many 'Hyppies' around. So, the next time you plan to have a vacation, please give your own backyard a priority like visiting rural areas in Sarawak or Sabah & longhouses along the Rejang river, go up further Ulu to Kapit and Belaga rather than spending too much money overseas only to buying things you can get easily from any shoplot in KLCC or any pasar malam. We'll give you a nice treat just as you're of our own. It's such a shame that a Swiss tourists couple whom I encountered not so long time ago actually told me that they were shocked to find that most of the wealthy Malaysians whom they met, the so called 'high-class' Malaysians have never been to any of these Ulu places, which they've been to not more than three times. Don't we feel ashamed of that; that we don't even know what's there in our own backyard? Tht's so lame. If English proficiency was to be taken as a yard stick in measuring how advanced and civilized you are,so be it and take this writing of mine and many more other Dayaks who actually feel more comfortable writing in English rather than the Bahasa Kebangsaan..because some of the old folks in my kampung do speak and understand English and some even understand Latin..shame on me!Gosh, I wonder did Julius Caesar actually came over to Borneo in order to Romanise the entire world; is that written and included in the world history?

So, with this I rest my case and I have no grudge against you Wilson except advices and forgiveness...
sincerely. So sorry if you feel a little bit of my sarcasms as it is how I normally advise people, and some who are sissy and emotionally vulnerable might and have always attempted to punch me or spit me in the face. So, sorry. Hey, maybe we can hang out once in a while and play FIFA09 on PS2 and see whether this 'rumah panjai' boy can defeat you. No grudge man, only PEACE!

So are we friends now? Don't worry, I'm not gonna eat you.. we don't eat humans, we eat pork just like you do.
