My contract is being extended until May 2006 as there's a teacher going for a 14-week course. Still be teaching English though.
Giving it a thought, teaching English to non-native speaker (or as a second or third language) IS VERY TOUGH! My students (most of them) could not be bothered whether they know English or not. Some refuse to try to improve themselves. It was pretty much frustrating to me since I REALLY want them to be better in English. But the mentality of 'anak rumah panjai enda iboh nemu jaku urang putih' still remains... 'to change a person's behaviour is possible, but to change one's thinking, mentality and values are so difficult that it is almost impossible' and I am fighting that battle now.
I've tried to highlight the importance of knowing English but they just shrugged it off... Am I fighting a losing battle? I know of countless teachers who've simply given up on that...Am I overly optimistic? Damn right, I am. I will try to make them improve their English even if they're fighting me with teeth and nails. I went to bed weary and tired (physically, emotionally, mentally) to the point of wanting to give it up, but thank to God almighty, when I woke up, my resolve is as strong as ever. And I am ready to continue the fight.

Yeah, I understand how you feel on changing the mentality of the students. Still, treat it as a game/challenge. ;)
When i was a teacher, this was what i tried.... asked the each student to write their ambition in every homework, test or any handout they going to pass down. After that, if they don't score... surely i'll put out the 'english' issue. Saying outsiders or people will definitely take advantage of you on your own disadvantage. Rampas rumah, tanah, everything and for all you know... after a while, these people will rob your cultures and traditions as well. Right? :P
maybe the students have only had teachers who have given up on them when it comes to learning the English language .. maybe what they need is someone like you, someone who insists that they learn the language, someone who doesn't have their "what's the point mentality".
Keep up the good work.
Masalah english tok memang dah teruklah. Kementerian Pendidikan pun terlibat sama, maioh subject ditukar ke jako english. English nyadi masalah ba schools,IPTA,IPTS & tempat kerja.
Kasih tudah! Enda ngacau berserara enda lama.
Bet u like your student now even though they bother u so much. Expert teachers pula meri feedback, keputusan PMR meningkat secara mendadak walaupun ia baru pertama kali ujian PMR dlm english in science and math. So keputusan PMR dipersoalkan qualiti keputusannya. So pikir secara rasional sapa tau kitai percaya, Lembaga peperiksaan punya result or experts teachers expectation.
Let him go for a better future,
Kim & Puteri,
thanks for the encouragement. Yeah, I do hope that at least I had made a positive impact in their lives(though maybe not now, since they hated me for the endless exercises that i gave them).
encha,
Yes. Masalah English memang dah teruk but hopefully something can & will be done to remedy and improve the situation.
cuthess,
yes, i do kinda like them now even though they can be such pain in the neck.hehe. Tapi sedih la sebab next week aku nadai agi ngajar sida laban aku ambil alih kelas Hanapiah.
Pasal result PMR, not much can be said. Jaga air muka vs quality issue. Hmmmm....
Hubby left for JB today. I am ok since we've had this whole Long distance thing for quite some time (Kch-Bintulu/ Kch-Saratok/ Bintangor-Saratok).Also, with telecommunications technology now, well still be near.hehe. lagipun, 'now everyone can fly'...hehehe
ehehehehe ... i thought i was the only one facing this kinda of stuff ...
to be accurate, students nowadays, alotta them are sitting in the school not to learn the language, but instead, they are sitting there just for the sake of passing the exam(or whateva) ... do you agree or not? I've seen too many cases already, habis darjah enam ... quit school n work ... with what????? They thought they can survive in the suburban jungle called city with just the UPSR sijil????? WTF were they thinkin? So, as not to burden their parents anymore? Yeah right ....
But, still ... it's our job we have to do it ... anyway or another ... by crook or by hook ... if not, i don't want to be blame by them later on in their life when they say, " Cigu aku suba mangah la ... bakani aku belajar englsih?" ....
in secondary school it's worse i think.the boy students want to berlagak but didn't want to learn (hero kampung whatever la), the girls sudah pandai mau berangan2 ka belaki.bergaya, berfesyen sigi champion, tang belajar, membaca pun enda nemu... susah hati wooo...
